Turkey Hunting

Welcome to South Dakota for Your Self Guided Merriam Turkey Hunt.

Spring Turkey Season typically  begins the 2nd Saturday in April and runs through the 3rd Sunday in May.

Surrounded by 2.3 Million Acres of Public Land

Over 50% of the Black HIlls National Forest is accessible to public hunting and our turkey population is excellent. A short drive from the cabins will get you away from private property and into the hunting unit which strectches 100 miles from north to south and 40 miles east to west.

Mountain Terrain, Weather  and Essential Equipment for Your Hunt

The terrain varies from rolling hills and praires to high mountains, rim rock and deep gorges.  We prefer the good old Black Hills National Forest Map which can be purchased on line, or at our local gas station.

Be prepared to walk the woods in mountain country.  Hill City rests about 5000 feet above sea level and weather conditions can vary quickly in the spring.  Expect anything from hot and dry to rain or snow -- on the same day! Road access is very good  and although most logging roads can be negotiated with an ordinary vehicle in dry conditions, we prefer a 4 wheel drive.   You may start out with a dry gravel road that deteriorates to a muddy dirt path.

We wish you a successful hunt for the Black Hills Merriam and thank you for considering  Pine Rest Cabins as your base camp.

Feel free to drop us a line or give us a call with your questions.   Visit the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks web page for more information and to apply for your license.
